New York City Feral Cat Initiative

The New York City Feral Cat Initiative (NYCFCI) is a program of the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals that is committed to solving NYC's feral and stray community cat overpopulation crisis through the humane, non-lethal method of Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR).

The NYCFCI provides services and resources to TNR caretakers in the NYC area, including free TNR certification workshops in all five boroughs. A free, online course is also offered, as well as specialty workshops in bottle-feeding, taming feral kittens, and neighbor relations. Free equipment loans, transport of traps to and from TNR sites, transport of cats to and from spay/neuter appointments, cat food giveaways, and limited hands-on TNR assistance are also offered to Certified TNR Caretakers.

The NYCFCI offers advice and information to the general public by phone and e-mail, and disseminates feline educational information via its website and printed materials.

How Does NYCFCI Support Our Progress Toward a No-kill NYC?

Tens of thousands of street cats live in the alleyways, backyards, and outdoor spaces of New York City. Because these cats are not socialized to humans, they are not candidates for adoption, and most adult feral cats taken in at city shelters are euthanized (killed). In addition, the breeding of these street cats results in more kittens entering the shelters — taking away homes that would otherwise go to the adult cats already there.

In 2015, our community-wide Live Release Rate rose to an unprecedented 90%. Supporting the efforts of feral cat caretakers, educating New Yorkers about TNR for feral cats, and promoting adoption for friendly cats living on the street will continue to play an important role in this success.

How Does Your Donation Help?

Donations of any size are put to immediate use helping the street cats and TNR volunteers in New York City. With your support, NYCFCI can provide cat food or winter-ready shelters to a needy Certified TNR Caretaker; provide one-on-one assistance to a volunteer who is completing a Trap-Neuter-Return project for the first time; train a new class of Certified TNR Caretakers; or provide start-up supplies for a volunteer to bottle-feed a litter of orphaned kittens.
